Channel. Greenhouse

Channel. Greenhouse is an ongoing performance series that takes place in the living rooms of the artists’ families, playfully engaging with chroma key technique and household items curated by their mothers.

The project was initiated by Korean artist Minkyung Choi in 2018 as an attempt to communicate a sense of uneasiness that comes from her financial dependency on her parents while living with them. Utilizing chromakey costume and daily objects, the performer treats her existence as a ‘hole’ in the pro-capitalist and patriarchal family background. The performance stopped as she moved out from her parent’s apartment, however the issues remained unresolved as the artist continued to depend on her family.

In the spring of 2020, the project gained new life in collaboration with Dina Mimi, the Palestinian artist. Minkyung Choi and Dina Mimi met through the show, Artist at Work and started to create a series of performance videos under the circumstance in which they cannot leave their parents’ houses (for different reasons). The artists’ physical and cultural distance allowed openness and imagination towards each other’s world, exploring connection despite their differences. The exchange of video letters developed from saying hello to sharing each other's cultural and political climates. The performances reflect on the artists’ daily lives, where they become transparent, censored and observed.
